FAQ

BUDLEIGH SALTERTON AND DISTRICT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HOSPISCARE

Why are you fund-raising?
Hospiscare in Budleigh Salterton and the surrounding area is a charity wholly funded by the interest from invested funds, donations, legacies, and fund-raising activities, organised and run by a Committee of volunteers.  In line with many organisations, we are facing a serious reduction in income, particularly from investments. It has to be stressed that we receive no funds from Government sources.

We pay all the costs involved in employing our two dedicated nurses, specialists in the palliative care at home of people suffering from cancer, and other potentially life threatening diseases.  'All the costs' means salaries, pension contributions, mileage, telephones, and associated administration. We try to relieve the burden on relatives and friends of patients and offer support to the recently bereaved.  Trained volunteers offer a wide variety of services including free transport for patients to and from treatment, and sitting-in to allow carers a break. A mileage allowance is paid to the volunteer drivers. We also contribute financially to the Hospice in Exeter where in-patient treatment is available.

How to seek help?
We cover Budleigh Salterton and Woodbury Surgeries, taking in the wide geographical area covered by the two practices.  The patient's own GP will usually refer the patient for care.  It is stressed that all these services are provided free to the patient.

How can you help?
Become a Member:  The minimum annual subscription is £5 (a maximum is not specified!). Members can attend the Annual General Meeting, elect the Committee members, and help direct the way Hospiscare operates.  The Charity 'belongs' to its Members and our membership base is declining with the passing years. Since we are totally reliant on voluntary contributions, any help in this way is gratefully received.
OR
Become a Volunteer:  It is rewarding, valuable and even fun. Training is given, but it is practical and social.

To become a Member or a Volunteer, contact the Membership Secretary, Volunteer Organiser or Honorary Secretary via The Medical Centre, 1 The Lawn, Budleigh Salterton EX9 6LS (a post box is located in the foyer).

Hospiscare has provided this invaluable local service for local people from local funds for over 25 years.  Please help it to continue.
